The magic boost building is still useful long term as a lot of the event prize units are in the magic category so it is not as wasteful as going the machine route.

In reality your problem when...

I went with High Priests and the magic boost building, you only need to upgrade wizards spire to 7. The gnomish lab plus machine boost building is not worth the gold and time

I got my defence over 70k at max allies and sat at level 48 where no dragon breeders can see you. Saved about 3 million gold (IPH was about 15k) then went to level 50...

You can turn off the weather effects in options, might help with your crashing problems

I did my BD run over christmas. There were 3 or 4 events during that time plus people were off work/school so had more time to be on the game. I still managed to get BD10 so don't give up hope
